Handbrake Cable Replacement
Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.
- Ensure that the park brake is in the fully released position.
- Release the park brake lever boot from the floor console by applying light pressure inward on the sides of the boot retainer, and pull the boot back.
- With the park brake lever in the released position, loosen the adjusting nut (1) enough to completely relieve tension on the front cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the wheel and tyre assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
- Remove the rear park brake cable retaining clip (1) from the drum brake backing plate.
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever of the drum brake shoe.
- Remove the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and remove the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) from the rear axle bracket.
- Remove the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and remove the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) from the rear side rail.
- Remove the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and remove the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) from the floor panel cross bar.
- Detach the park brake cable (1) from the bracket on the floor panel.
- Separate the park brake cable (1) from the park brake cable equaliser (2) and remove the park brake cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, connect the park brake cable from the park brake lever of the drum brake shoe.
- Install the rear park brake cable retaining clip (1) to the drum brake backing plate.
- Connect the park brake cable (1) to the park brake cable equaliser (2) and install the park brake cable (1) to the mounting bracket on the floor panel.
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) to the floor panel cross bar.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and tighten to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) to the rear side rail.
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and tighten to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp (2) to the rear axle bracket.
- Install the park brake cable mounting clamp nut (1) and tighten to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
- Install the wheel and tyre assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
- Adjust the park brake cable tension. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment .
