Brake Warning Indicator Malfunction

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

While the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the battery voltage is provided to the brake warning indicator on the instrument panel cluster (IPC). When the brake fluid level indicator switch is grounded as the brake fluid level is too low, or when the park brake is applied and the park brake switch is grounded, the Red Brake Warning Indicator is illuminated.

Circuit/System Verification

Verify the park brake is released and the brake fluid is at or above the proper level.

If low, refer to Brake Fluid Loss .

Circuit/System Testing

Park Brake Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the park brake switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify the brake warning indicator on the IPC is illuminated.
  3. If illuminated, test the circuit between the terminal A of the park brake switch connector and the terminal X2-2 of the IPC connector for a short circuit to ground. If the circuit tests normal, inspect the IPC.
  4. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the terminal A of the park brake switch connector and ground. Verify the brake warning indicator on the IPC is illuminated.
  5. If not illuminated, test the circuit between the terminal A of the park brake switch connector and the terminal X2-2 of the IPC connector for an open or high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, inspect the IPC.
  6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the park brake switch.

Brake Fluid Level Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake fluid level switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, with the park brake released, verify the brake warning indicator on the IPC is illuminated.
  5. If illuminated, test the circuit between the terminal 1 of the brake fluid level switch connector and the terminal X2-2 of the IPC connector for a short circuit to ground. If the circuit tests normal, inspect the IPC.
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the terminal 1 of the brake fluid level switch and ground. Verify the brake warning indicator on the IPC is illuminated.
  7. If not illuminated, test the circuit between the terminal 1 of the brake fluid level switch connector and the terminal X2-2 of the IPC connector for an open or high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, inspect the IPC.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the brake fluid level switch.

Component Testing

Park Brake Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the park brake switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the terminal A of the park brake switch and ground with the park brake released.
  3. If less than the specified value, replace the park brake switch.
  4. Test for less than 1 ohm between the terminal A of the park brake switch and ground with the park brake applied.
  5. If greater than the specified range, replace the park brake switch.

Brake Fluid Level Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake fluid level switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the terminal 1 and 2 of the brake fluid level switch.
  3. If less than the specified value, replace the brake fluid switch.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.

    •  Brake Fluid Level Indicator Switch Replacement
    •  Handbrake Indicator Switch Replacement
