Braking Action Uneven — Pulls to One Side

Test Description

The number below refer to the step number on the diagnostic table:

  1. Suspension components that are not operating properly may cause a disturbance to the vehicle during application of the brake system.

  2. Steering components that are not operating correctly may cause a disturbance to the vehicle during application of the brake system.

  1. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for the following conditions:
  2. • Kinked, pinched or damaged brake pipe or flexible brake hose
    • Sticking or improperly operating calliper piston
    • Sticking or improperly operating wheel cylinder pistons
    • Brake fluid leak
  3. Adjust, repair or replace components as necessary. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Diagnosis .

  1. Inspect the disc brake system for the following conditions:
  2. • Contaminated linings
    • Glazed linings
    • Distorted, cracked or damaged linings on one side
    • Loose, damaged or missing calliper hardware and/or lining hardware
    • Incorrect linings on one side
    • Hard spots, heat checks, blueing discolouration of rotor friction surfaces; possibly due to brake drag
    • Glazed rotor friction surfaces
    • Bent or damaged calliper or mounting component
  3. Adjust, repair or replace components as necessary. Refer to Disc Brake System Diagnosis .

  1. Inspect the drum brake system for the following conditions:
  2. • Improper adjustment or improper adjuster operation
    • Weak or damaged return spring or springs
    • Glazed linings
    • Contaminated linings
    • Distorted or damaged linings
    • Incorrect linings on one side
    • Excessively worn or damaged drum on one side
  3. Adjust, repair or replace components as necessary. Refer to Drum Brake System Diagnosis .

  1. Inspect the suspension system for the following conditions:
  2. • Incorrect tyre pressure
    • Loose suspension component connections
    • Excessively worn or damaged suspension components
  3. Adjust, repair or replace components as necessary.
  4. Refer to Symptoms - Suspension General Diagnosis .

  1. Inspect the steering system for the following conditions:
  2. • Loose steering component connections
    • Excessively worn or damaged steering components
  3. Adjust, repair or replace components as necessary. Refer to Symptoms - Power Steering System .

  1. Install or connect components that were removed or disconnected during diagnosis.
  2. Road test the vehicle in order to confirm proper operation. Refer to Brake System Vehicle Road Test .
