Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check

Be sure to carry out this check before carrying out any other. Do not replace, add to or adjust the level of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) before carrying out reproducing test of the problem.

ATF Level and Condition

1. Drive the vehicle until ATF reaches normal temperature, 70-80° C (158-176° F). This temperature will be reached after approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) of urban driving.
2. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake while the engine is idling. Move the select lever slowly from P to 1 and then move it back to P.
3. While the engine is running, pull out the oil level gauge, wipe it clean with a paper towel and insert it to check the ATF level. The level of the fluid should be within the range specified on the level gauge. If the level is too low, add the recommended ATF. Check the ATF for abnormal odour, foreign matter, or discolouration.

Note: 

•	The fluid level changes before and after the engine is warmed up. Be sure to follow the procedure above when carrying out this check.

•	Before carrying out the check, be sure to wipe away dirt and grime from around the level gauge to prevent anything from entering the transmission.

ATF Level

The ATF level should be within the specified range. If the level is low, visually check the transmission for leakage.

ATF Condition

Normal ATF is red and has moderate viscosity. If the fluid has become dark, very viscous, or has an abnormal odour (a burnt smell), carry out the road, stall, and oil pressure tests. If the vehicle operates normally, change the fluid and carry out the road test again. If the fluid has become light in colour, the oil cooler may be damaged.
