DTC P0101

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor

DTC P0101: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance

Circuit Description

The engine control module (ECM) calculates the amount of air entering the engine using the signal from the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor in order to provide the correct fuel delivery for all engine speeds and loads. A small quantity of air entering the engine indicates a deceleration or idle condition. A large quantity of air entering the engine indicates an acceleration or high load condition.

This DTC monitors the airflow based on the MAP sensor against the airflow based on the throttle opening and determines that the correct airflow control cannot be achieved by the electronic throttle control (ETC) system.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    •  DTC P0106, P0107, P0108, P0112, or P0113 is not set.
    •  The engine is running.
    •  The throttle actuation mode is not off.
    •  The DTC runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the measured airflow is much higher than throttle based estimated airflow.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0101 is a Type E DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0101 is a Type E DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

    • Certain aftermarket air filters may cause this DTC to set.
    • Certain aftermarket air induction systems may cause this DTC to set.
    • Modifications to the air induction system may cause this DTC to set.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify no DTCs are set.
  2. If any DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle
  3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the Freeze Fame/Failure Records Data List.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Inspect the manifold absolute pressure sensor for performance by performing the Circuit/System Testing of the DTC P0106. Refer to DTC P0106.
  2. Verify the integrity of the entire air induction system by inspecting for the following conditions:
  3. • An engine vacuum leak
    • An air leak in the intake air duct between the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor and the intake valve
    • A plugged or collapsed inlet air duct
    • Restrictions in the MAP sensor port or vacuum source
    • Loose or improper installation of the PCV hose
    • A restricted throttle plate or for carbon build-up around the throttle plate
    • An unseated engine oil dip stick
    • A loose or missing engine oil fill cap
    • An over filled crankcase
If you find any of the above conditions, repair as necessary.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
