Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) enables the appropriate fuel injector pulse for each cylinder. Ignition voltage is supplied to the fuel injectors. The ECM controls each fuel injector by grounding the control circuit via a solid state device called a driver. The ECM monitors the status of each driver.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTC P0562 or P0563 is not set.
    • The ignition is ON.
    • The ignition voltage is between 11-16V.
    • The DTC runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0261, P0264, P0267, or P0270

The ECM detects a short circuit to ground or an open circuit on the injector control circuit.

P0262, P0265, P0268, or P0271

The ECM detects a short circuit to voltage on the injector control circuit.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0261, P0262, P0264, P0265, P0267, P0268, P0270, and P0271 are Type E DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0261, P0262, P0264, P0265, P0267, P0268, P0270, and P0271 are Type E DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: If you were sent here from engine cranks but does not run, proceed to circuit/system testing.

  1. Engine running, verify that the DTCs P0261, P0262, P0264, P0265, P0267, P0268, P0270, or P0271 is not set.
  2. Observe the injector control circuit test status parameters. Each of the injector control circuit test status parameters should display OK or Not Run.
  3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate fuel injector.
  2. • Q17A Fuel Injector 1
    • Q17B Fuel Injector 2
    • Q17C Fuel Injector 3
    • Q17D Fuel Injector 4
  3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  4. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. Replace the fuse if necessary.
  5. Ignition OFF, connect a J 34730-405 lamp between the control circuit terminal 2 and the ignition circuit terminal 1.
  6. Engine running, verify the test lamp flashes.
  7. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate fuel injector.
  9. • Q17A Fuel Injector 1
    • Q17B Fuel Injector 2
    • Q17C Fuel Injector 3
    • Q17D Fuel Injector 4

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate fuel injector.
  2. • Q17A Fuel Injector 1
    • Q17B Fuel Injector 2
    • Q17C Fuel Injector 3
    • Q17D Fuel Injector 4

Note: The engine coolant temperature (ECT) must be between 10-32°C (50-90°F) in order for an accurate measurement.

  3. Test for 11-14Ω between the ignition terminal 1 and the control terminal 2.
  4. If not within the specified range, replace the appropriate fuel injector.
    • Q17A Fuel Injector 1
    • Q17B Fuel Injector 2
    • Q17C Fuel Injector 3
    • Q17D Fuel Injector 4
