Bluetooth Communication Description and Operation -- Holden Genuine Accessory
Bluetooth Wireless Technology
Bluetooth Wireless Technology is a cordless link between two devices, in this case, a mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit. Bluetooth devices communicate via low-power radio waves. Bluetooth communicates on a frequency of 2.45 gigahertz which has been reserved by international agreement for the use of industrial, scientific and medical devices (ISM).
Due to the low power of the signal, approximately 1 milliwatt, a mobile telephone must be within 10 metres (32 feet) of the vehicle's Bluetooth Module to connect and operate. However the mobile telephone and the Bluetooth module do not need to be in a direct line of sight. For example, the mobile telephone can be in the centre console or in a bag while connected to the Bluetooth car kit.
When a paired mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit come within range of one another, an electronic conversation automatically takes place and the devices form a personal-area network (PAN), or piconet, in the vehicle. To avoid interference from other Bluetooth devices, once a piconet is established, the paired mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit randomly hop frequencies in unison so they stay in touch with one another and avoid other piconets that may be operating in the same area.
Bluetooth Definitions
Paired:
The Bluetooth module and the mobile telephone have stored each other's ID in memory and are available to be connected when they are within 10 metres (32 feet) of each other.
Connected:
The mobile telephone handset is currently linked with the Bluetooth car kit. All functions on the Bluetooth car kit are active.
Pairing a Mobile Telephone
Important: Important: If a Blackberry/PDA device is being used, the pairing action may take several seconds longer to complete. Do not interrupt during this process or the pairing will not be successful.
The pairing between a mobile telephone with Bluetooth capability and the Bluetooth car kit can be established using the following procedure.
- Drive the vehicle to a location where there is minimal traffic. Make sure there are no other paired mobile telephones in the vehicle or in the 10 metre (32 feet) vicinity of the vehicle.
- Switch the mobile telephone ON.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position and hold the Bluetooth switch for four seconds.
- Perform the following steps on the mobile telephone:
4.1. | Enter the Bluetooth menu. |
4.2. | Activate the Bluetooth function. |
4.3. | Search for Bluetooth devices. |
4.4. | Select the device labelled "GM.BT". (This label may be accompanied by the software version number). |
4.5. | Enter the following PIN: 1234. This establishes the connection between the mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit. |
4.6. | Set the mobile telephone to accept Bluetooth connection requests automatically without permission (if required). |
Pairing multiple mobile telephones
The Bluetooth car kit can be paired with up to five mobile telephones, but can only be connected to one mobile telephone at a time. If a sixth mobile telephone is paired with the Bluetooth car kit, the first or least recent mobile telephone paired with the Bluetooth car kit ID will be over written and will no longer be paired with the Bluetooth car kit.
When the ignition is switched on, the Bluetooth car kit searches for the most recently paired mobile telephone.
Connecting a Mobile Telephone
Important: Make sure the mobile telephone being connected has been paired with the Bluetooth car kit or the connection will not be successful.
Connection between a paired mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit can be established using the following procedure.
- Move the mobile telephone to within 10 metres (32 feet) of the vehicle's Bluetooth Module, preferably inside the vehicle.
- Make sure the mobile telephone is switched on and the Bluetooth function has been activated.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position.
- Press the Bluetooth switch.
Bluetooth Call Options
After connection between a mobile telephone and the Bluetooth car kit has been established, the following call options may be selected. Refer to the Bluetooth Car Kit Owner's Handbook for specific detail on each call option.
• | Normal mobile phone function - Make and answer calls normally on the mobile phone handset. |
• | Voice dialling - If the mobile phone is capable, the voice dialling capability can be used with the Bluetooth communication. |
• | Automatic answer - If activated, the mobile phone automatically answers incoming calls after one ring. |
• | Rejecting a call - Calls can be rejected by pressing the Bluetooth switch until the ring tone stops. |
• | Ending a call - Calls can be ended by pressing the Bluetooth switch once. |
• | Redial the last number - If there is no call in progress, the last number can be redialled by pressing the Bluetooth switch twice. |
Cancelling the Bluetooth Connection

• | Turn the ignition to the OFF position. |
• | If no call is in progress, press and hold the Bluetooth switch for four seconds. |
