Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust signal from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.

Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust. The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled - up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The engine speed is greater than 80 RPM.
    • DTC P0606 00 is not set.
    • The ignition voltage is between 10-18 V.
    • The ECM has commanded the camshaft position actuator inlet or camshaft position actuator exhaust solenoid ON and OFF at least once during the ignition cycle.
    • DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P0289 00, P2090 00, and P2091 00 run continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 1 s.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0010 00

The ECM detects an open in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

P0013 00

The ECM detects an open in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust Solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

P2088 00

The ECM detects a short to ground in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

P2089 00

The ECM detects a short to voltage in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded ON.

P2090 00

The ECM detects a short to ground in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

P2091 00

The ECM detects a short to voltage in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded ON.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P2089 00, P2090 00, P2091 00 are type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P2089 00, P2090 00, P2091 00 are type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

If the condition is intermittent, move the related harnesses and connectors, with the engine operating, while monitoring the scan tool circuit status parameters for the component. The circuit status parameters change from OK or not run to fault if there is a condition with the circuit or a connection.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: The engine oil level and the oil pressure are critical to the correct operation of the camshaft position actuator system. Verify that the engine has the correct oil level and the correct oil pressure before continuing with this diagnostic, see engine mechanical specifications.

  1. Ignition ON, command the appropriate Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve ON and OFF with a scan tool. You should hear the solenoid click when commanded ON and OFF.
  2. Engine idling, observe the following scan tool control circuit status parameters:
  3. • Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit High Voltage Test Status
    • Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Open Test Status
    • Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Low Voltage Test Status
    • Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit High Voltage Test Status
    • Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Open Test Status
    • Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Low Voltage Test Status
Each parameter should display OK or Not Run.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF for 1 min, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  4. Ignition ON, test for 12 V between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  6. Command the appropriate Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from 12 V when commanded OFF to smaller than 10 V when commanded ON.
  7. If the circuit voltage does not correspond to the specified values, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  8. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.

Component Testing

Static Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Inlet or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.
  2. Test for 7-12 Ω between the terminals of the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  3. If not within the specified range, replace the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  4. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust housing.
