Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust are attached to each camshaft and is operated hydraulically in order to change the angle of the camshaft relative to crankshaft position. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust are controlled by the engine control module (ECM). The ECM sends a pulse width modulated signal to a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoids. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoids controls the amount of engine oil flow to a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust can change the camshaft angle by a maximum of 20°. The ECM increases the pulse width to accomplish the desired camshaft operation.

The ECM controls the solenoid with a solid state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTC P0010 00, P0013 00, P0016 00, P0017 00, P0335 00, P0336 00, P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00, or P0366 00 is not set.
    • The engine is running.
    • The ignition voltage is between 11-18 V.
    • The camshaft position actuator is enabled.
    •  The rate of change in the camshaft position is less than 5° for 4 s.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects a difference of greater than 8° between the camshaft position angle position and the desired camshaft position for greater than 30 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • DTCs P0011 00 and P0014 00 are Type B DTCs.
    • The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust are commanded to the park position.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0011 00 and P0014 00 are Type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

    • The engine oil condition has a major impact on the camshaft actuator system.
    • A low oil level condition may set this DTC. The engine may require an oil change. Inquire with the customer when the last oil change was performed. You may also monitor the scan tool Engine Oil Life Remaining parameter. Advise the customer an oil change may be required.
    • Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, or timing belt can cause this DTC to set.
    • A resistance greater than 8 Ω on the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake or camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust control circuit may set this DTC. If you suspect high resistance, ground the control circuit while the engine is idling. The scan tool Inlet Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Low Voltage Test Status or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Low Voltage Test Status parameter should display Fault. If the parameter displays OK, test the control circuit for high resistance.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: The engine oil level and the oil pressure are critical to the correct operation of the camshaft position actuator system. Verify that the engine has the correct oil level and the correct oil pressure before continuing with this diagnostic.

Refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications : 1.8L 2H0 .

  1. Engine idling at operating temperature, command the appropriate Inlet Camshaft Position Actuator or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator to 20° with a scan tool. The Desired Intake Camshaft Position or Desired Exhaust Camshaft Position parameter value should match the Intake Camshaft Position or Exhaust Camshaft Position angle parameter value.
  2. Observe the Inlet Camshaft Position Variance or Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance value on the scan tool. The Inlet Camshaft Position Variance or Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance value will increment for several seconds until the Inlet Camshaft Position or Exhaust Camshaft Position angle value matches the Desired Inlet Camshaft Position or Desired Exhaust Camshaft Position value. The Inlet Camshaft Position Variance or Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance value should then return to 0°.
  3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF for 1 min, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  2. Verify a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp does not illuminates between the control circuit terminal 1 and the low reference circuit terminal 2.
  5. If the test lamp illuminates, test the low reference circuit for an ground. If the circuit test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  6. Command the appropriate Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp turn ON and OFF according to the commanded state.
  7. If the test lamp does not correspond to the commanded state, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance or a short to voltage. If the circuit test, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  8. Remove the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid. Inspect the appropriate camshaft position actuator solenoid valve and mounting area for the following conditions:
  9. • For torn, restricted, mis-positioned, or missing screens at the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust
    • For engine oil leaks between the oil sealing lands of the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid, inspect the lands of the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid for nicks
    • Remove the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
⇒If a condition is found, replace the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.

Note: This step is testing the mechanical operation of the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve that set the DTC.

  10. Ignition OFF, swap the suspected Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid with a Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust actuator solenoid that is operating correctly.
  11. Engine idling, command the appropriate Inlet Camshaft Position Actuator or Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator to 20° and back to 0° while observing the appropriate scan tool Inlet Camshaft Position Variance or Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance value parameter. The Inlet Camshaft Position Variance or Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance value should be less than 2° in each of the commanded states.
  12. If greater than the specified value, replace or repair the mechanical camshaft position actuator operation.
  13. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.

Component Testing

Static Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Inlet or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.
  2. Test for 7-12 Ω between the terminals of the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  3. If not within the specified range, replace the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust solenoid.
  4. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust housing.
