Circuit/System Description

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor responds to pressure changes in the inlet manifold. The pressure changes occur based on the engine load. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the MAP sensor on the 5 V reference circuit. The ECM provides an ground on the low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a signal to the ECM on the MAP sensor signal circuit which is relative to the pressure changes in the manifold. The ECM detects a low signal voltage at a low MAP, such as during an idle or a deceleration. The ECM detects a high signal voltage at a high MAP, such as the ignition is ON, with the engine OFF, or at a wide open throttle (WOT). The MAP sensor is also used to determine the barometric pressure (BARO).

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTCs P0102 00, P0103 00, P0107 00, P0108 00, P0112 00, P0113 00, P0117 00, P0118 00, P0335 00, or P0336 00 are not set.
    • The engine speed is between 400-6 500 RPM.
    • The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between 70-125°C (158-257°F).
    • The inlet air temperature (IAT) sensor is between -20 to +125°C (-4 to +257°F).
    • The DTC runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the actual MAP signal is not within the predicted range for greater than 15 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0106 00 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0106 00 is a Type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

A high resistance condition in the MAP sensor circuits will cause this DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify that DTC P0107 00, P0108 00, or P0697 00 is not set.
  2. If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
  3. Verify none of the following conditions exist:
  4. • Restricted exhaust, refer to Restricted Exhaust : Diesel .
    • Engine mechanical condition for example, low compression or incorrect timing belt installation. Refer to Symptoms - Engine Mechanical .
  5. Determine the current vehicle testing altitude. Compare the MAP Sensor parameter to the reading in the Altitude Versus Barometric Pressure .
  6. Start the engine and observe the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change while starting the engine.
  7. Engine running, observe the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter. The reading should be between 26-52 kPa (3.8-7.6 PSI).
  8. Snap the throttle while observing the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change rapidly when the throttle position changes.
  9. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Verify the integrity of the entire air induction system by inspecting for the following conditions:
  2. • Any damaged components
    • Loose or improper installation
    • An air flow restriction
    • Improperly routed vacuum hoses
    • In cold climates, inspect for any snow or ice buildup
  3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B74 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor.
  4. Ignition OFF for 1 min, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal A and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  6. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the B74 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor 5 V reference circuit terminal C and ground.
  7. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
    If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  8. Verify the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter is 0.00 V.
  9. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal B for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  10. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the B74 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor signal circuit terminal B and the 5 V reference circuit terminal C. Verify the scan tool MAP sensor parameter is at 5 V.
  11. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  12. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B74 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor.

Component Testing

Static Test

The ignition ON engine OFF, MAP sensor scan tool value should decrease within 4 kPa (0.6 PSI) by the amount of vacuum applied with the EN 23738-A Mityvac. For example, at 92 kPa (13.3 PSI), the MAP sensor scan tool reading should be between 71-79 kPa (10.29-11.45 PSI) with 17 kPa (2.47 PSI) of vacuum applied to the sensor.
