DTC P1159, P1161, P1168, P1402, or P1407 - LNP or LNQ

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptors

DTC P1159 00: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Circuit

DTC P1161 00: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Circuit Low Voltage

DTC P1168 00: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Circuit High Voltage

DTC P1402 00: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Circuit Low Voltage

DTC P1407 00: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Circuit Shorted

Circuit/System Description

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) through the EGR solenoid. A reference voltage is supplied to the EGR valve solenoid. The ECM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The ignition is ON or the engine is running.
    • The DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects an open, short to ground, or short to voltage on the EGR control circuit when the ECM is commanding the EGR On.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P1159 00, P1161 00, P1168 00, P1402 00, or P1407 00 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P1159 00, P1161 00, P1168 00, P1402 00, or P1407 00 is a Type B DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Desired EGR Position and the EGR Position Sensor parameters. Command the EGR valve from 0-40% with a scan tool. The parameters should remain within 3% throughout the commanded range.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector X1 from the K20 Engine Control Module.
  3. Test for less than 5 Ω between the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 6 and K20 Engine Control Module terminal 90
  4. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance
  5. Test for less than 5 Ω between the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 2 and K20 Engine Control Module terminal 91
  6. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance
  7. Test for infinite resistance between the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 2 and ground , and between the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 6 and ground.
  8. If less than the specified range, test the appropriate control circuit for a short to ground.
  9. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.3 V between the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 2 and ground , and between Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve terminal 6 and ground.
  10. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
  11. If all circuits test normal, replace the Q14 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve or the K20 Engine Control Module.
