Cylinder Head Installation

Special Tools

    • EN-470-B Angle Meter
    •  GE-571-B Dial Gauge
    • EN-50437 Height Gauge - Piston TDC

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

Cleaning Procedure

Note: Ensure that the cylinder head and the cylinder block sealing surfaces are clear of oil, grease and old gasket material.

Clean the engine block in order to assure correct measurement. Refer to Engine Block Cleaning and Inspection .

Choose the Gasket

  1. Align TDC of piston 1.
  2. Measure the piston projection thickness, using the EN-50437 height gauge - piston TDC .
  3. Repeat the measuring process for cylinders 2, 3, 4 and average the measured piston projection values.
  4. Choose the cylinder head gasket according to the specifications below.

1.05 (1 U-Groove)

1.15 (2 U-Grooves)

1.25(3 U-Grooves)

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cylinder head (3) and a NEW gasket (4).
  2. Note: DO NOT tighten the bolts yet.

  3. Install the 10 NEW cylinder head retaining bolts (2).
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Tighten the NEW cylinder head retaining bolts (2) in 4 steps in sequence as shown in the illustration above:
  6. 3.1. First step 30 N·m (22 lb ft)
    3.2. Second step 100 N·m (74 lb ft)
    3.3. Third step 90°. Use the EN-470-B angle meter .
    3.4. Fourth step 90°. Use the EN-470-B angle meter .

  7. Install the camshaft seat guide (1).
