Steering Gear Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving.
  2. Remove the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Remove the tyre and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  5. Remove the steering linkage outer track rod nut and disconnect the track rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Track rod Replacement .
  6. Place a large container under the vehicle in order to collect the draining fluid.

  8. Remove the power steering gear feed tube fittings (1).
  9. Remove the power steering gear inlet and outlet pipe fittings (2) from the steering gear (3).

  11. Remove the power steering gear outlet pipe/hose clamp nut (1). Refer to Power Steering Gear Outlet Pipe/Hose Replacement .
  12. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame from the vehicle. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement : with CH-49289 → with EN-49802 .

  14. Remove the power steering gear bolts (1)
  15. Remove the power steering gear assembly (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear assembly (2).
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering gear bolts (1) and tighten to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).
  4. Install the drivetrain and front suspension frame to the vehicle. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement : with CH-49289 → with EN-49802 .

  6. Install the power steering gear outlet pipe/hose clamp nut (1) and tighten to 9 N·m (80 lb in). Refer to Power Steering Gear Outlet Pipe/Hose Replacement .

  8. Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet pipe fittings (2) to the steering gear (3) and tighten to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
  9. Install the power steering gear feed tube fittings (1) and tighten to 13 N·m (10 lb in).
  10. Connect the track rod to the steering knuckle and install the steering linkage outer track rod nut and tighten to 50 N·m (37 lb ft). Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Track rod Replacement .
  11. Install the tyre and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  12. Install the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  13. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment .
  14. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
