DTC P0315 - Without FX3
Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptor
DTC P0315: Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned
Circuit/System Description
The crankshaft position sensor system variation learn feature is used to calculate reference period errors caused by slight build tolerance variations in the crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft, and crankshaft position sensor position. The calculated error allows the engine control module (ECM) to accurately compensate for reference period variations. This enhances the ability of the ECM to detect misfire events over a wide range of engine speeds and load conditions. The ECM stores the crankshaft position system variation values after a learn procedure, which is performed automatically by the ECM. If the CKP system variation learn values exceed thresholds, DTC P0315 sets.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | The DTC runs continuously when the above conditions are met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects 1 or 2 missing or additional tooth during one crankshaft revolution.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P0315 is a Type C DTC.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTC P0315 is a Type C DTC.

Circuit/System Testing
- Clear the DTC with a scan tool.
- Engage the parking brake, place the gear in park or neutral position.
- Start the engine. Depress the accelerator pedal to wide open throttle (WOT) above 5,500 RPM, then release the pedal.
- Ignition OFF for 30 seconds, repeat step 1 through step 4 twice.
- Verify the DTC P0315 is not set.
⇒ | If the DTC resets, inspect for the following conditions: |
• | A worn or damaged crankshaft or crankshaft bearings |
• | Debris between the CKP sensor and the reluctor wheel |
• | A damaged reluctor wheel |
• | Excessive crankshaft runout |
• | Any interference of the CKP sensor or CKP sensor signal to the control module |
- Repeat step 1 through step 4. If the ECM still sets the DTC, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
