Seat Belt Indicator Circuit Malfunction - Passenger

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

Circuit/System Description

The passenger seat belt switch supplies a ground to the SDM when the seat belt is buckled. When a seat belt is unbuckled, a switch opens removing the ground to the SDM. The SDM will then supply voltage to the seat belt indicator which will then cause that indicator to illuminate.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, have someone sit in the passenger seat. Using a scan tool, verify that the Passenger Seat Occupancy Status indicates Occupied.
  2. If the scan tool does not indicate Occupied, test the seat belt reminder sensor signal circuit and the low reference circuit for an open or short. If the circuits test normal, replace the seat belt reminder sensor. Refer to Driver or Passenger Seat Cushion Pad Replacement .
  3. Observe the Passenger Seat Belt Status scan tool parameter while buckling and unbuckling the passenger seat belt. The values should change from Unbuckled to Buckled.
  4. If the values do not change, refer to Seat Belt Switch Malfunction.
  5. Command the Driver Seat Belt Reminder ON and OFF with a scan tool, the seat belt indicator should turn ON and OFF while changing between the commanded states.
  6. If the indicator is always ON or always OFF, refer to Seat Belt Indicator Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Seat Belt Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B88 passenger seat belt switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K36 SDM.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Seat Belt Status parameter is Buckled.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K36 SDM.
  6. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and the ground circuit terminal 1. Verify the scan tool Seat Belt Status parameter is Buckled.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K36 SDM
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B88 passenger seat belt switch.

Seat Belt Indicator Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A5 driver information centre.
  2. Test for less than 1 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 7 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 11 and ground.
  5. Ignition ON, command the Driver Seat Belt Reminder ON and OFF with a scan tool, the test lamp should turn ON and OFF while changing between the commanded states.
  6. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K36 SDM.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K36 SDM.
  7. If all circuit test normal, test or replace the A5 driver information centre.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B88 passenger seat belt switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal 2 and the ground terminal 1, at the switch, with the switch in the open position.
  3. If not the specified value, replace the B88 passenger seat belt switch.
  4. Test for less than 2 Ω between the signal terminal 2 and the ground terminal 1, at the switch, with the switch in the closed position.
  5. If greater than the specified range, replace the B88 passenger seat belt switch.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.

    •  Front Seat Belt Buckle Replacement
    • Control Module References for the SDM and DIC replacement, setup, and programming
