DTC 02

Circuit Description

This vehicle uses the speed sensitive power steering (SSPS) system. The SSPS system is controlled by SSPS control module. The control module controls steering effort by controlling current supplied into magnetic coil that is equipped in steering gear according to vehicle speed variation.

When the ignition switch is turned to "ON", the SSPS control module will perform the self-test for about 1.5 seconds (max 3.0s) to diagnose malfunctions in SSPS circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition switch is ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The SSPS control module detects a system voltage above 16 volts.
    • The SSPS control module detects a system voltage below 9 volts.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The SSPS warning light will illuminate.
    • Power steering assist will default to full power steering effort.
    • The SSPS will store a DTC 02 in memory.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • Conditions for the fault are no longer present.
    • Using the scan tool

Diagnostic Aids

Check for the following conditions if a history or intermittent DTC is indicated.

    • A poor connection at the SSPS--Inspect the harness connectors for backed out terminals, improper mating, improperly formed or damaged terminals, and poor terminal to wire connections.
    • A damaged wiring harness--Inspect the wiring harness for damages. If the wiring harness appears to be in good condition, observe the display on the multimeter while moving the connectors and wiring harnesses related to the circuits. A change in the multimeter display during the test will indicate the location of the fault.

Check for a poor connection at the SSPS control module and SSPS actuator.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Confirm the ignition switch is OFF.
  2. Disconnect the connector of control module wiring.
  3. Confirm the ignition switch is ON.
  4. Check the voltage between the terminal 8 of control module wiring and good ground.

Is the voltage within the specified value?

9-16 V

Check the voltage between the terminal 8 and 10 of control module wiring.

Is the voltage within the specified value?

9-16 V

Check the resistance between the terminal 43 of I/P fuse block and the terminal 8 of control module wiring connector.

Is the resistance about 0 Ω?

0 Ω

Check the fuse F15.

Is the fuse blown?

Check the vehicle charging system including alternator. Refer to Charging System Test

Is the charging system OK?

Replace or repair the damaged wiring.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the SSPS control module.

Replace the fuse F15.
