The crankshaft position sensor signal indicates the crankshaft speed and position. The crankshaft position sensor produces an AC voltage of different amplitude and frequency. The frequency depends on the velocity of the crankshaft, and the AC voltage output depends on the crankshaft position and battery voltage. The crankshaft position sensor works in conjunction with a 58X reluctor wheel attached to the crankshaft. The engine control module (ECM) can synchronize the ignition timing, fuel injector timing, and spark knock control based on the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor inputs. The crankshaft position sensor is also used to detect misfire and tachometer display.
• | DTC P0016 00 and P0340 00 are not set. |
• | The engine is cranking or running. |
• | These DTCs runs continuously once the above conditions are met. |
The ECM does not detect a signal from the crankshaft position sensor.
The ECM detects an incorrect number of crankshaft position sensor reference pulses for 10 consecutive crankshaft revolutions.
• | DTCs P0335 00 and P0336 00 are Type B DTCs. |
• | The ECM will use the camshaft position sensor for engine operation. |
DTCs P0335 00 and P0336 00 are Type B DTCs.
The following conditions can also set the DTC:
• | Physical damage to the crankshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel |
• | Worn or loose crankshaft position sensor or reluctor wheel |
• | Improper installation of the crankshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel |
• | Foreign material between the crankshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel |
• | Gap between the crankshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel is out of range |

Note: If you were sent here from engine cranks but does not run, proceed to circuit/system testing.
Note: If the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor lead is damaged in any way, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If not within the specified range, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor. |
