Steering Gear Replacement — Electronic Power Steering

Special Tools

    • CH 904 Underframe
    • EN 45059 Torque Angle Sensor Kit
    • CH 49289 Centring Adapter

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving.

  3. Remove the lower steering intermediate shaft bolt (1).
  4. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  6. Remove the tyre and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  7. Remove the front compartment insulator, if equipped Front Compartment Insulator Replacement .
  8. Remove the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement .
  9. Remove the steering linkage inner track rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Inner Track Rod Replacement .

  11. Remove lower stabiliser link shaft nut (2) on both sides.
  12. Remove stabiliser shaft link (1) from stabiliser shaft.
  13. Remove stabiliser link shaft (1) from stabiliser.

  15. Remove 4 fasteners (1) of engine side cover on both sides.

  17. Remove 4 fasteners (1) of front engine compartment cover.

  19. Remove the front (1) and the rear (2) transmission mount bracket bolts.

  21. Remove and DISCARD 2 rear suspension frame bolts (2).
  22. Remove rear frame reinforcements (1).

  23. Assemble the CH-49289 centring frame  (1) according to the details provided in the SPX installation manual.
  24. Support the CH-904 base frame on a jack.
  25. Support the CH-49289 centring frame on the CH-904 base frame .

  27. Position and set hydraulic lifter in connection with CH-904 frame and CH-49289-50 adapter (2) onto suspension frame (1). Bent front cover beside.
  28. Lower suspension frame max. 55 mm (2.165 in).

  30. Disconnect 2 wiring harness plugs (3) from steering gear.
  31. Remove 2 wiring harness bracket bolts (4).
  32. Remove bracket (2) from vehicle.
  33. Remove wiring harness retainer (1) from steering gear.

  35. Remove 2 right stabilizer shaft (1) insulator clamp bolts (2).
  36. Suspend stabiliser shaft (1) to body.

  37. Remove and DISCARD the 2 steering gear bolts (4) and nuts (2, 3) from front suspension frame.
  38. Remove steering gear (2) through right side.
  39. Replace assembly parts if necessary:
  40. • Replace outer track rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Track rod Replacement .
    • Replace inner track rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Inner Track Rod Replacement .
    • Replace steering gear boot. Refer to Steering Gear Boot Replacement .

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Ensure that the steering column dash seal is installed properly onto steering gear rack pinion housing. The sealing lip MUST rest on lower steering column cover surface evenly. To ease installation of the seal, apply liquid soap to the sealing lip. After installation, verify that the seal lip does not protrude into the vehicle's interior. Improper installation could result in poor sealing performance and water intrusion into the vehicle.

    Note: Check correct wiring routing in order to assure correct installation.

  1. Insert steering gear (2) through right side and position steering gear into installation position.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Tighten the NEW steering gear bolts (4) and nuts (1, 3) to 110 N·m (81 lb ft) + 150° to 165°, using the EN-45059 sensor.

  5. Install and tighten 2 wiring harness bracket bolts (4) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
  6. Tighten wiring harness retainer (1) to steering gear.
  7. Connect 2 wiring harness plugs (3).

  9. Position stabiliser shaft (1) and bracket onto suspension frame.
  10. Install and tighten right stabilizer shaft insulator clamp bolts (2) to 22 N·m (16 lb ft) + 30°.

  12. Move out positioning pins (1) of CH-49289 adapter .
  13. Lower the CH-49289 centring frame  (1) with the CH-904 base frame and a jack until it is removable.
  14. Remove the CH-49289 centring frame from the CH-904 base frame .

  16. Disassemble the CH-49289 centring frame  (1) according to the details provided in the SPX installation manual.

  18. Raise the frame (1) carefully, using CH 49289 adapter (2).

    Note: Note: Do NOT reuse old bolts

  20. Install the frame reinforcements (1).
  21. Install the NEW frame rear bolts (2) and tighten to 160 N·m (119 lb ft).

  23. Install the front transmission mount bolt (1) and tighten to 58 N·m (43 lb ft).
  24. Install the rear transmission mount bracket bolt (2) and tighten to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  26. Install and tighten 4 fasteners (1) of engine side cover on both sides.

  28. Install and tighten 4 fasteners (1) of front engine compartment cover.
  29. Install the front compartment insulator, if equipped Front Compartment Insulator Replacement .
  30. Install the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement .
  31. Install the steering linkage inner track rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Inner Track Rod Replacement .

  33. Install and tighten lower stabiliser link shaft nut (2) on both sides to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
  34. Lower the vehicle.
  35. Centre the steering angle sensor. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Centreing .
  36. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  37. Check and adjust wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement .
