Circuit/System Description

The position of the swirl flaps is controlled by the engine control module (ECM). The ECM controls the inlet manifold runner control solenoid valve to create a swirl in the combustion chamber to get a homogeneous diesel air mixture. The ECM will vary the inlet manifold runner control solenoid valve referring to the barometric pressure and the mass air flow. The ECM uses a pulse width modulation on the control circuit to control the inlet manifold runner control solenoid valve.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Engine is running

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P2008 00

The ECM detects an open circuit for more than 1 s.

P2009 00

The ECM detects the inlet manifold tuning solenoid valve control circuit is shorted to ground for more than 1 s.

P200A 00

The ECM detects an overtemperature of the intake manifold tuning solenoid valve control output driver.

P2010 00

The ECM detects the inlet manifold tuning solenoid valve control circuit is shorted to voltage for more than 1 s.

P2016

The ECM detects a short to ground or an open circuit for more than 5 s.

P2017

The ECM detects a short to voltage for more than 5 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, command the Intake Manifold Runner Control Solenoid Valve 5-59% with a scan tool. Observe the Inlet Manifold Runner Control Valve Feedback Signal parameter.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.
  2. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the ignition circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  3. If the test lamp is OFF, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and the ignition circuit terminal 2.
  5. Command the Intake Manifold Runner 5-59% with a scan tool. The test lamp should illuminate more or less bright when changing between the commanded states.
  6. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
  7. If all circuits test normal, replace the Q22 Inlet manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.
