Air Conditioning Evaporator Thermal Expansion Valve Replacement — 1.7L Diesel LUD

GE-39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement .
  3. Unclip the brake pipes from the dash lower extension panel.

  5. Remove the air conditioning evaporator hose bolt from the air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve.
  6. Remove the air conditioning evaporator hose (1) from air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve.
  7. Remove the 2 air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve bolts (2).
  8. Remove the air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve (3).
  9. Remove and DISCARD the seals from the air conditioning evaporator hose and from the evaporator core pipes.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Install NEW system seals. Refer to Air Conditioning System Seal Replacement .
  2. Install air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve (3) and the 2 air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve bolts (2) and tighten to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
  3. Install air conditioning evaporator hose (1) to air conditioning evaporator thermal expansion valve (3).
  4. Install and tighten air conditioning evaporator hose (1) to 22 N·m (16 lb ft)

  5. Install brake pipes to the dash lower extension panel.
  6. Install engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement .
  7. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  8. Leak test the fittings using the GE-39400-A detector.
