DTC Descriptor

DTC C0161 5A: Antilock Braking System Brake Switch Circuit Not Plausible

Circuit/System Description

The body control module monitors the brake pedal position sensor signal circuit when the brake pedal is applied and sends a serial data message to the electronic brake control module indicating the brake pedal position. The electronic brake control module compares the brake pressure sensor signal to the brake pedal position and uses this information for vehicle stability control.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition ON

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The EBCM detects 4 accelerations from standstill to a vehicle speed greater 40 km/h (26 MPH) without any brake light switch signal changes.
    • The EBCM detects the vehicle speed is greater than 20 km/h (13 MPH), the brake pedal is applied for 360 s, and brake pressure is less than 15 bar (218 PSI).

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

A current DTC clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

No actions were taken.

Diagnostic Aids

The DTC C0161 5A can be set if the brake pedal is applied while accelerating or the brake pedal position sensor is out of adjustment.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the stop lamps while applying and releasing the brake pedal. Verify the stop lamps operate properly.
  2. [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  3. If the brake lamps do not operate properly

    Refer to Symptoms - Lighting .

  4. [/ARW-LISTFAIL][ARW-LISTPASS]
  5. If the brake lamps operate properly

  6. [/ARW-LISTPASS]
  7. All OK.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF.
  2. Replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module, ignition ON.
  3. Verify the DTC is not set.
  4. [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  5. If the DTC is set

    Replace the K9 Body Control Module.

  6. [/ARW-LISTFAIL][ARW-LISTPASS]
  7. If the DTC does not set

  8. [/ARW-LISTPASS]
  9. All OK.
