GM Oil Life System Resetting

The engine oil life system lets you know when to change the engine oil and filter. Based on driving conditions, the interval at which an engine oil and filter change will be indicated can vary considerably. How to display the remaining oil duration is described in the Owners Manual under Instruments and controls. For the oil life system to work properly, the system must be reset every time the oil is changed. When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. The uplevel display will indicate CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON. The low level display will indicate a certain code which is referenced in the Owners Manual. The engine oil and filter must be changed by a workshop within one week or 500 km (300 miles). It is possible that, if the vehicle is driven under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must be changed by 30 000 km (18,640 miles) but at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever the oil and filter is changed.
