Water-in-Fuel Lamp Diagnosis

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

Ignition 1 voltage is supplied directly to the water in fuel lamp. The engine control module (ECM) turns the water in fuel lamp ON by sending a request to the instrument panel cluster via the CAN communication circuit. The ECM monitors the amount of water in the fuel with a sensor located in the fuel filter assembly. When the water in the fuel is above an acceptable level, the ECM sends a request to illuminate the water in fuel lamp.

  2. If the DTC is set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
  3. Command the All Indicators test ON and OFF with a scan tool, verify that the water in fuel indicator changes between turn ON and OFF.
  4. If the water in fuel indicator always stays on or always off, replace the P16 Instrument Cluster.
