Circuit/System Description

The wheel speeds are detected by active wheel speed sensors and encoder rings. The encoder ring consists of permanent magnets. Each wheel speed sensor receives 12 V reference voltage from the electronic brake control module (EBCM) and provides an alternating current square wave signal to the EBCM. As the wheel spins, the EBCM uses the frequency of the square wave signal to calculate the wheel speed.

Conditions for Running the DTC

C0035 06 - C0050 06

Ignition ON

C0035 0F - C0050 0F

    • Ignition ON
    • Vehicle speed is greater than 35 km/h (22 MPH)

C0035 18 - C0050 18

    • Ignition ON
    • Vehicle speed is greater than 10 km/h (6 MPH)

C0035 5A - C0050 5A

    • Ignition ON
    • Vehicle speed is greater than 20 km/h (13 MPH)

Conditions for Setting the DTC

C0035 06 - C0050 06

A short to voltage, short to ground or open/high resistance on the wheel speed sensor 12 V reference or low reference circuit is detected for 0.14 s.

C0035 0F - C0050 0F

An erratic wheel speed sensor signal is detected for 0.17 s.

C0035 18 - C0050 18

A missing wheel speed sensor signal is detected for 180 s.

C0035 5A - C0050 5A

Difference between fastest and slowest wheel speed is greater than 50% for 30 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the ABS, traction control, and stability control for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • The ABS indicator turns ON.
    • The traction control/stability control-active indicator turns ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • A current DTC clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
    • The EBCM will turn OFF the indicator in the next ignition cycle.

Diagnostic Aids

    • Do not use a magnet to clean the encoder ring.
    • If 2 or more wheel speed sensors are inoperative, diagnose each wheel speed sensor individually.
    • If the customer comments that the ABS indicator is ON only during moist environmental conditions (rain, snow, vehicle wash, etc.), inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring for signs of water intrusion.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Wheel Speed Sensor parameters. The reading should be the same speed on all sensors when driving in a straight line at a speed greater than 20 km/h (13 MPH).

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Inspect the appropriate B5 Wheel Speed Sensor for contamination, physical damage and correct installation.
  2. [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  3. If contamination, physical damage or incorrect installation is diagnosed

    Repair or replace the wheel speed sensor.

  5. If the inspection is OK

  7. Ignition OFF.
  8. Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate B5 Wheel Speed Sensor, ignition ON.
  9. Test for greater than 11 V between the 12 V reference circuit terminal 2 at the harness connector of the appropriate wheel speed sensor and ground:
  10. [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  11. If less than 11 V

  12. [/ARW-LISTFAIL]
    4.1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module.
    4.2. Test for infinite resistance between the 12 V reference circuit and ground

  13. If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.

    4.3. Test for less than 2 Ω in the 12 V reference circuit end to end.

  17. If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.

  18. If less than 2 Ω, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module

  20. If greater than 11 V

  22. Test for greater than 11 V between the 12 V reference circuit terminal 2 and the low reference circuit terminal 1 at the harness connector of the appropriate B5 Wheel Speed Sensor.

    5.1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module.
    5.2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.

  26. If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.

  27. If less than 2 Ω, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module

  31. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module.
  32. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.3 V between the appropriate circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  33. • Left front wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 36 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right front wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 27 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Left rear wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 29 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right rear wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 34 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  34. If greater than 0.3 V

    Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.

  36. If less than 0.3 V

  38. Test the appropriate B5 Wheel Speed Sensor. Refer to Component Testing.

    Replace the B5 Wheel Speed Sensor.

Component Testing

Note: The following wheel speed sensor test is polarity sensitive. The wheel speed sensor can be permanently damaged if the polarity is reversed during the test.

Dynamic Test

  1. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the wheel speed sensor.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module.
  3. Connect a fused jumper wire between B+ and the appropriate circuit terminal listed below:
  4. • Left front wheel speed sensor 12 V reference circuit terminal 36 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right front wheel speed sensor 12 V reference circuit terminal 27 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Left rear wheel speed sensor 12 V reference circuit terminal 29 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right rear wheel speed sensor 12 V reference circuit terminal 34 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
  5. Spin the wheel very slowly, test for alternating current between ca. 7 mA and ca. 14 mA between the appropriate circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  6. • Left front wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 37 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right front wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 26 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Left rear wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 30 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    • Right rear wheel speed sensor low reference circuit terminal 33 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module harness connector
    [ARW-LISTFAIL]
  7. If not between 7-14 mA

    Replace the wheel speed sensor.

  8. [/ARW-LISTFAIL][ARW-LISTPASS]
  9. If between 7-14 mA

  10. [/ARW-LISTPASS]
  11. All OK.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the repair.
