Transmission Replacement — 2.4L LAF

Special Tools

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
2. Remove the wiring harness starter motor from the transmission.
3. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement .
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
5. Remove the left front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Splash Shield Replacement .
6. Drain the transmission fluid.
7. Lower the vehicle.



8. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then disconnect the connector from the transmission.
9. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement : 2.0L Diesel LNP → LDE, LUW, 2H0, and LAF .
10. DISCARD the inlet pipe seal.
11. Remove the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement : 2.0L Diesel LNP → LDE, LUW, 2H0, LFH and LAF .
12. DISCARD the outlet pipe seal.
13. Plug and cap the pipes and the transmission to prevent contamination.
14. Remove the transmission vent hose .



15. Remove the 2 upper transmission bolts (1).
16. Raise the vehicle.

17. Assemble the CH-49290 support tool (1) according to the details provided in the SPX installation manual.
18. Support the CH-904 base frame on a jack.
19. Support the CH-49290 support tool on the CH-904 base frame.

20. Install the CH-49290 support tool (1) according to the details provided in the SPX installation manual.
21. Remove the drivetrain and the front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .
22. Disconnect the left front wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side .
23. Remove the front wheel drive intermediate shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement .
24. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear : LAF and LBN → LNP .
25. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement .
26. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement : 2.4L LAF → 2.0L Diesel LNP with MT → 2.0L Diesel LNP with AT → 1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L 2H0, LUW and LFH .
27. Remove the access cover from the transmission.
28. Mark the relationship of the flex plate to the torque converter for reassembly.



29. Remove and DISCARD the flex plate to the torque converter bolts (1).
30. Lower the vehicle.
31. Install the EN-47649 fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
32. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side .
33. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left-hand side with the engine support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
34. Raise the vehicle.



35. Remove the transmission bolts (1, 2, 3) and remove cover (4).



36. Place the DT-47648 transmission holder onto CH-904 base frame and pre-install the supports as shown in the illustration.
37. Pre-install the DT-47648-2 clutch housing support (4) to position 2 on the base plate.
38. Pre-install the DT-47648-4 transmission housing support (2) to position 14 on the base plate.
39. Pre-install the DT-47648-5 left support with rear transmission swivel arm (1) to position A on the base plate.
40. Pre-install the DT-47648-5 right support with front transmission swivel arm (3) to position F on the base plate.




Note: Before placing in position, slacken all bolt connections of the swivel arms and supports as far as the base plate. Adjust the supports for the converter housing and transmission housing using the spindles until they are as low as possible.

41. Attach the DT-47648 holder to the transmission.
42. Align the DT-47648 holder under the transmission.
43. Attach the swivel arms (1, 2) to the transmission.

Note: Align the swivel arms so that as little leverage as possible is created.

44. Tighten the bolt connections of the swivel arms, starting from the transmission and going as far as the base plate.
45. Position supports for clutch housing and transmission housing to transmission by twist up the spindles.
46. Tighten bolt connections of the supports.



47. Remove the transmission bolts (1)
48. Separate the transmission from the engine.
49. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack and DT-47648 holder far enough to remove the transmission.

1. If the removed transmission is to be reinstalled, clean 3 threads of torque converter.
2. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and DT-47648 holder and position the transmission to the engine.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.




3. Install the transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).



4. Install the transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
5. Install the transmission bolt (3) and tighten to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
6. Install the transmission bolt (2) and tighten to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
7. Remove the transmission jack with the DT-47648 holder.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Raise the engine and the transmission on the left-hand side with the engine support fixture.
10. Install the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
11. Raise the vehicle.



12. Install the NEW flex plate to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).
13. Install the access cover on the transmission.
14. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement : 2.4L LAF → 2.0L Diesel LNP with MT → 2.0L Diesel LNP with AT → 1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L 2H0, LUW and LFH .
15. Install the transmission rear mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear : LAF and LBN → LNP .
16. Install the transmission front mount to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement .
17. Install the front wheel drive intermediate shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement .
18. Install the left front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side .
19. Install the drivetrain and the front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .
20. Remove the EN-47649 fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .

Caution: Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

21. Tighten the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts a first pass to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
22. Tighten the 3 transmission mount bolts a final pass to an additional 60° to 75°, using the EN-45059 meter .
23. Raise the vehicle.



24. Lower the CH-49290 support tool (1) with the CH-904 base frame and a jack.
25. Remove the CH-49290 support tool from the CH-904 base frame.

26. Disassemble the CH-49290 support tool (1) according to the details provided in the SPX installation manual.
27. Install the left front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Splash Shield Replacement .
28. Lower the vehicle.
29. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement : 2.0L Diesel LNP → LDE, LUW, 2H0, LFH and LAF .
30. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement : 2.0L Diesel LNP → LDE, LUW, 2H0, and LAF .



31. Connect the electrical connector (1) TCM, then connect the wiring harness to transmission.
32. Install the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement .
33. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector lever cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
34. Install the wiring harness starter motor to the transmission.
35. Fill the transmission with the correct fluid.
36. Install the transmission vent hose.
37. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
38. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check .
39. Refer to Control Module References for programming and set up information.
