The crankshaft position sensor signal indicates the crankshaft speed and position. The crankshaft position sensor produces an alternating current voltage of different amplitude and frequency. The frequency depends on the velocity of the crankshaft and the alternating current voltage output depends on the crankshaft position and battery voltage. The engine control module (ECM) can synchronise the ignition timing, fuel injector timing based on the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor inputs. The sensor crankshaft position sensor is also used to detect misfire and tachometer display. The crankshaft position sensor circuits are connected directly to the ECM.
• | The engine is cranking or operating. |
• | The engine control module detects no or wrong signal. |
• | The DTC runs continuously once the above conditions are met. |
The crankshaft position sensor input does not continue when the engine is running.
• | DTC P0336 00 is a Type A DTC. |
• | DTC P0339 00 is a Type B DTC. |
• | DTC P0336 00 is a Type A DTC. |
• | DTC P0339 00 is a Type B DTC. |
The following conditions may also set the DTC:
• | Physical damage to the crankshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel |
• | Excessive play or looseness of the crankshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel |
• | Improper installation of the crankshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel |
• | Excessive air gap between crankshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel |
Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Type Definitions
Control Module References for scan tool information
Engine starting or running, observe the scan tool Engine Speed parameter. The reading should be between 50-850 RPM.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
Note: You must perform the circuit/system testing before proceeding with component testing.
Remove the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor and inspect the sensor and the O-ring for damage.
⇒ | If the sensor is loose, incorrectly installed, or damaged, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor. |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
