DTC P0580 or P0581

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptors

DTC P0580 00: Cruise Control Multifunction Switch Circuit Low Voltage

DTC P0581 00: Cruise Control Multifunction Switch Circuit High Voltage

Circuit/System Description

The cruise control switch is an input to the body control module (BCM). The BCM monitors the cruise control on/off, set/freewheel, and the resume/accelerate switch signal circuits in order to detect when a cruise control function switch has been activated. The BCM detects a predetermined voltage signal when a cruise control function switch is applied, with each switch having a different voltage value.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The cruise switch is ON.
    • The ignition is ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The ECM detects an invalid voltage signal on the cruise control switch signal circuit.
    • The above condition is present for greater than 2 s.
    • The ECM runs this diagnostic every 0.05 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • DTC P0580 00 and P0581 00 are type C DTCs.
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will not illuminate.
    • The cruise control system is disabled.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
    • A history DTC will clear after 40 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC B3794 should not be set.
  2. If DTC B3794 is set, refer to DTC B3794 .
  3. While rotating the steering wheel to both steering stops, observe the scan tool Cruise Control Switch parameter while pressing each of the cruise control switches. The parameter should toggle between On, Off, Resume and Set as the applicable switch is pressed.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the wiring harness plug at the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left.
  2. Ignition ON, test for B+ between the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If less than the specified range, test the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left circuit terminal 1 circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.
  4. Test for B+ between the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left voltage reference circuit terminal 1 and the signal circuit terminal 3.
  5. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.
  6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X3 harness connector at the K9 Body Control Module.
  7. Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 9 and ground.
  8. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
  9. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left.

Component Testing

Static Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the wiring harness plug at the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left.
  2. Cruise control switch ON, test for the following resistance values between the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left terminal 1 and terminal 3 while activating the following cruise control button functions:
  3. • Cruise control switch OFF, resistance should be infinite.
    • No cruise control button pressed (switch at rest), resistance should be approximately 6.5-7.1k Ω.
    • Cruise Set/Acceleration button (I), resistance should be approximately 2.2-2.4k Ω.
    • Cruise Resume/Coast button (R), resistance should be approximately 3.7-3.9k Ω.
    • Cruise Cancel button (0), resistance should be approximately 1.4-1.6k Ω.
⇒If any of the resistance values are not within the specified range, replace the S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
