Audio Distortion - One or More Speakers

If the list leads to the replacement of a component, always inspect for a poor connection before proceeding with replacement. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections .

  1. Turn ON the radio.
  2. Adjust the volume to the lowest setting that can be heard.

Is the lowest audible setting too loud?

Compare the volume to a similar vehicle with the same audio system.

Are both vehicles the same?

Test the amplifier sense signal circuit for an open or high resistance.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the audio amplifier sensor signal circuit and ground.
  3. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the amplifier sensor signal circuit and ground.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the scan tool indicate that the audio amplifier is present?

Inspect for poor connections at the wiring harness plug of the radio.

Inspect for poor connections at the wiring harness plug of the audio amplifier.
