Circuit/System Description

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor responds to pressure changes in the inlet manifold. The pressure changes occur based on the engine load. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the MAP sensor on the 5 V reference circuit. The ECM provides an ground on the low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a signal to the ECM on the MAP sensor signal circuit which is relative to the pressure changes in the manifold. The ECM detects a low signal voltage at a low MAP, such as during an idle or a deceleration. The ECM detects a high signal voltage at a high MAP, such as the ignition is ON, with the engine OFF, or at a wide open throttle (WOT). The MAP sensor is also used to determine the barometric pressure (BARO). This occurs when the ignition switch is turned ON, with the engine OFF. The BARO reading may also be updated whenever the TP sensor is greater than 28 percent.

Condition for Running the DTC

    • DTCs P0107, P0108, P0122, P0122, P0123, P0221, P0222, P0223, and P2135 are not set.
    • The engine is running for greater than 2 s.
    • The DTC runs continuously once the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the actual MAP signal is not within the predicted range.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0106 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

DTC P0106 is a Type B DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTCs P0107, P0108, or P0651 should not set.
  2. If any DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .

    Note: The vehicle used for the comparison is not limited to the same type of vehicle being serviced. A vehicle known to provide an accurate reading is acceptable.

  3. Compare the scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter to the pressure parameter of a known good vehicle. The reading should be within 3 kPa (0.5 psi) of the known good vehicle.
  4. Note: The Altitude vs Barometric Pressure table indicates a pressure range for a given altitude under normal weather conditions. Weather conditions consisting of very low or very high pressure and/or very low or very high temperature may cause a reading to be slightly out of range.

  5. Compare the scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter to the reading in the Altitude Versus Barometric Pressure table. The scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter should be within the specified range indicated on the table.
  6. Start the engine and observe the scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change while starting the engine.
  7. Engine running, observe the scan tool MAP sensor parameter. The reading should be between 32-48 kPa (5-7 psi).
  8. Snap the throttle while observing the scan tool MAP sensor pressure parameter. The MAP sensor pressure parameter should change rapidly when the throttle position changes.
  9. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Verify none of the following conditions exist:
  2. • Vacuum leaks or restrictions at the MAP sensor
    • Engine vacuum leaks
    • Leaking exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
    • Restricted exhaust
    • Engine mechanical condition--Refer to Engine Compression Test : LE5 or LE9 .
  3. Ignition OFF, and the MAIN fuse removed, disconnect the harness connector at the MAP sensor.
  4. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  6. Install the MAIN fuse. Ignition ON, install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3. Verify the scan tool MAP sensor parameter is greater than 102 kPa (15 psi).
  7. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit and the 5 V reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the ECM.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the MAP sensor.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the MAP sensor.
  2. Apply 5 V and ground to the applicable terminals of the MAP sensor. Test the voltage from the signal circuit to ground. Apply the specified vacuum to the MAP sensor.
  3. If the voltage is not within the specified range, replace the MAP sensor.
