Engine Control Module Scan Tool Information - LE5 w/GDS

Table 1: Engine Control Module Scan Tool Data Parameters
Table 2: Engine Control Module Scan Tool Output Controls

The Engine Control Module Scan Tool Data List contains all engine-related parameters that are available on the scan tool. The list is arranged in alphabetical order. A given parameter may appear in any one of the data lists, and in some cases may appear more than once, or in more than one data list in order to group certain related parameters together.

Use the Engine Scan Tool Data List only after the following is determined:

    • The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle is completed.
    • No diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
    • On-board diagnostics are functioning properly

The scan tool values from a properly running engine may be used for comparison with the engine you are diagnosing. The Engine Scan Tool Data List represents values that would be seen on a normally running engine.

Note: A scan tool that displays faulty data should not be used. The scan tool concern should be reported to the manufacturer. Use of a faulty scan tool can result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary parts replacement.

Only the parameters listed below are referenced in this service manual for use in diagnosis. If all values are within the typical range described below, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls for the 2.4L engine for diagnosis.

Exhaust Cam Phase Solenoid Bank 1 Enable; Exhaust Cam Phase Solenoid ON

Clutch Pedal Position Learn

This device control is used to trigger the procedure to learn the clutch pedal fully applied position.

Compression Test

This device control is used to set up the internal combustion engine for a compression test. The fuel pump, fuel injectors, and spark are all disabled. The throttle is opened to a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position. For conventional engine vehicles, the extended crank feature is not active, and for strong hybrid vehicles, the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module is configured to crank at the speed specified in the device control command. Engine cranking is completely controlled by the technician either through the ignition key or through a remote starter switch as applicable. The device control limits and rejects will apply normally upon entry to the device control. Once the device control is active, the limits will be monitored (to prevent unwanted starter operation, for example), but in the case of a limit exceeded or a tester disconnect, device control of the fuel and spark will not be released until the Power Mode switches to Accessory or OFF. This will prevent unexpected fuel and spark operation in the case of a device control abort.

Enables/disables a cylinder by turning OFF the fuel injector to the cylinder. The fuel injector is normally enabled. The control module disables the fuel injector when the following conditions are met:

    • All the instructions on the scan tool have been completed.
    • The engine speed has stabilised.
    • The fuel injector has been selected.
    • When DISABLE is selected, the control module turns the injector OFF for 30 s.

Engine Controls Ignition Relay

Activates the engine controls ignition relay. The commanded states include NONE, ON, and OFF. The normal commanded state is NONE. The system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the tool.

Engine Oil Life Reset

This device control contains the engine oil remaining life determined from an algorithm based upon the effective engine revolutions and the distance driven since the last oil change. This device control may be used to reset the engine oil remaining life to 100 % after an oil change or to any other value when replacing a control module

Engine Speed

Activates the throttle activation control (TAC) system to change engine RPM. The normal commanded state is None. To enable the RPM control, all instruction on the scan tool must be completed. The system will increase or decrease the RPM within a range of 400-2,000 RPM. The set step value changes the RPM by increments of 25 RPM, 100 RPM, and 500 RPM. The system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the scan tool.

EVAP Purge Solenoid Valve

Activates the purge solenoid in 10 % increments from 0 to 100 %. The device control will be aborted and inhibited if the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor exceeds -27 mm Hg (-14 in H2O).

Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator

This function controls the exhaust camshaft position actuator. The normal commanded state is 0 degrees. The system will INCREASE or DECREASE the exhaust camshaft timing by changing the duty cycle of the actuator in 5-degree increments up to 50 degrees. This also affects Desired Exhaust Camshaft Position Angle.

Fuel Control Loop Status

Controls the system loop status. The commanded states include NONE, OPEN, or CLOSED. The normal commanded state is NONE. When commanded OPEN or CLOSED, the system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the scan tool.

Fuel Injector Balance

Enables the fuel injector in order to verify proper fuel injector flow. The ECM will pulse the selected injector when the following conditions are met:

    • All instruction on the scan tool completed
    • Fuel injector selected
    • Key ON, engine OFF
    • The selected fuel injector can only be flowed/pulsed once per ignition cycle

Fuel Pump Enable

This function controls the fuel pump. The normal commanded state is NONE. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:

    • There are no vehicle speed sensor DTCs set.
    • The vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph). When commanded ON/OFF, the engine control module (ECM) turns the fuel pump module ON/OFF. If the engine is running and the fuel pump is commanded OFF, the engine will stall. The system remains in the commanded state for about 2 seconds or until cancelled by the scan tool or the ECM detects a vehicle speed.

Fuel Trim Enable

Disables the ECMs ability to learn new fuel trim parameters. The commanded states are NONE, ENABLED, DISABLED. The normal commanded state is NONE. The system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the scan tool.

Fuel Trim Reset

Activates the reset of fuel trim data in all fuel trim cells.

Generator L-Terminal

Generator L-Terminal Enable; Generator L-Terminal ON

HO2S Heater Learn

This output control is used to trigger the reset of the learned resistances for the oxygen sensor heaters following a replacement in service. The learned resistances are reset to a calibration used to prevent overheating of the sensors until more accurate resistances may be learned following an extended engine OFF time, typically 12 or more hours.

HO2S Heater Sensor 1

Commands the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) heater from 0-100 % in 10 % increments. The normal state is NONE. The system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the tool or the heaters exceed a maximum temperature.

HO2S Heater Sensor 2

Commands the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) heater from 0-100 % in 10 % increments. The normal state is NONE. The system remains in the commanded state until cancelled by the tool or the heaters exceed a maximum temperature.

Idle Ignition Timing

Enables or disables idle spark command. When commanded ON, the idle spark will be controlled to 13 degrees before top dead center. The normal commanded state is OFF.

Idle Learn

This output control is used to reset the learned airflow adaptive values to their initial values.

Ignition Timing Retard

Controls the amount of spark retard. The scan tool will command an increase or decrease in the amount of spark retard in 1 degree increments, within a range of 1-10 degrees. The normal commanded state is None.

Inlet Camshaft Position Actuator

This function controls the intake camshaft position actuator. The normal commanded state is 0 degrees. The system will INCREASE or DECREASE the intake camshaft timing by changing the duty cycle of the actuator in 5 degree increments up to 40 degrees. This also affects Desired Intake Camshaft Position Angle.
