Circuit/System Description

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) supplies 12 volt reference to the steering angle sensor and the multi-axis acceleration sensor. The EBCM receives serial data messages from both the steering wheel angle sensor and the multi-axis acceleration sensor.

The steering wheel angle sensor sends a serial data message to the EBCM representing the steering wheel degree of rotation. The EBCM utilises this signal to calculate the driver intended driving direction.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is greater than 9.5 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The EBCM detects the following steering angle sensor fault:

    • Steering angle sensor is reporting an internal electronic failure.
    • Steering angle sensor output signal is out of range.
    • Steering angle sensor is not calibrated.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • Vehicle stability enhancement system are disabled.
    • One or all of the following warning indicators may activate:
       - ABS-TCS warning indicator
       - ABS-TCS warning display
       - Brake failure indicator
       - Trac-off warning display

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The current DTC moves into history when there is no current logged during the self-test.
    • The DTC is cleared with a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids

    • If the steering wheel position sensor is disconnected, DTCs will set and the EBCM will not provide voltage to the sensor.
    • A poor ground connection for the EBCM may cause this DTC to set.
    • Improperly mounted or loose steering wheel angle sensor.
    • Steering angle sensor is not calibrated.
    • The vehicle should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a level surface.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Verify that DTC C0460 42 or C0460 4B is not present.
  2. If DTC C0460 42 or C0460 4B is present, perform the Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centring .
  3. Verify that DTC C0460 5A is not present.
  4. If DTC C0460 5A is present, send the clear offset message using the scan tool, then perform the Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centring .
  5. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Steering Wheel Position parameter. The reading should correspond with the actual steering wheel position as the steering wheel is turned through its entire range of motion.
  6. If the parameter drops out or does not correspond with the actual steering wheel position, refer to Circuit/System Testing.
  7. Drive the vehicle in a straight ahead direction for 15 minutes. If the DTC did not set as a current DTC see diagnostic aids.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B99 Steering Wheel Angle Sensor.
  2. Test for less than 10 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 6 and ground.
  3. If greater than specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
  4. Ignition ON, test for B+ between the 12 V reference terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the 12 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
  6. Disconnect the harness connector at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
  7. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal 19 and ground.
  8. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
  9. Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal 18 and ground.
  10. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
  11. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 19 and ground.
  12. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
  13. Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 18 and ground.
  14. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
  15. Test for less than 2 Ω between the signal circuit terminal 19 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 4 at the B99 Steering Wheel Angle Sensor.
  16. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  17. Test for less than 2 Ω between the signal circuit terminal 18 at the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 3 at the B99 Steering Wheel Angle Sensor.
  18. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  19. If all circuits test normal, replace the B99 Steering Wheel Angle Sensor.
