DTC P0016 or P0017
Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptor
DTC P0016 00: Crankshaft Position - Intake Camshaft Position Not Plausible
DTC P0017 00: Crankshaft Position - Exhaust Camshaft Position Not Plausible
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) uses the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor - intake and the camshaft position sensor - exhaust information to monitor the correlation between the crankshaft, intake and exhaust camshaft position.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | DTCs P000A 00, P000B 00, P0010 00, P0013 00, P0014 00, P0335 00, P0336 00, P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00, P0366 00, P2088 00, P2089 00, P2090 00, or P2091 00 are not set. |
• | The engine speed is between 672-4 000 RPM. |
• | The battery voltage is between 10-16 V. |
• | The engine oil temperature is more than -10°C (14°F). |
• | The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is more than -9.8°C (14.4°F). |
• | These DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects an incorrect camshaft position sensor signal for 2 s.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P0016 00 and P0017 00 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P0016 00 and P0017 00 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids
The following conditions can also set the DTC:
• | A short to ground in a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit can cause this DTC to set. |
• | Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or timing belt can cause this DTC to set. |
• | Crankshaft end play out of the range can cause this DTC to set. |
• | A crankshaft reluctor wheel that has moved in relationship to top dead centre (TDC) can cause this DTC to set. |

Circuit/System Verification
Note: Incorrect oil viscosity, aftermarket engine oil additives, or engine oil that is overdue for changing can greatly affect the performance of the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve.
- Engine running, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTCs P0016 00 and P0017 00 should not set.
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, inspect the crankshaft balancer bolt for the proper torque. Refer to
Fastener Tightening Specifications : 1.6L LDE, LXV, and 1.8L 2H0 .
- Remove the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. Refer to Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Replacement .
- Connect a fused jumper wire between the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve voltage supply circuit at the solenoid and B+. Connect a jumper wire to the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit at the solenoid. Momentarily touch the jumper wire to ground. Observe the spool valve inside the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. The spool valve should move from fully closed to fully opened position.
⇒ | If the spool valve inside the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve does not move, replace the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. |
- Inspect the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve for binding or being stuck.
- Inspect the engine for correct valve timing. Refer to
Timing Belt Replacement : 1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L 2H0, and LUW .
