DTC C0293
Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptors
DTC C0293 01: Park Brake Switch Control Short to Battery
DTC C0293 06: Park Brake Switch Control Low Voltage/Open
DTC C0293 08: Park Brake Switch Control Performance-Signal Invalid
Circuit/System Description
The electric handbrake control module has an internal motor, apply actuator, release actuator, and temperature sensor. The electric handbrake control module also contains the logic for applying and releasing the handbrake when commanded by the electric handbrake switch. The electric parking brake module will perform diagnostics on the electric parking brake switch and its wiring harness to verify it is functioning properly. When the electric handbrake control module receives a signal from the switch the internal circuit board temperature is checked to verify it is within operating range before the control module performs the requested operation.
The electric park brake switch control diagnostic checks for failure conditions in the electric park brake switch and associated wiring into the electric park brake module.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition OFF, ACCESSORY, or RUN mode.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The electric handbrake module detects a short-circuit to battery, short-circuit to ground, open circuit, or an internal handbrake switch control malfunction.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• | The electric handbrake is disabled. |
• | A DIC message and/or a warning indicator may be displayed. |
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• | The electric handbrake module clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 40 ignition cycles. |
• | The condition for the DTC is no longer present. |

Circuit/System Test
C0293 01 or C0293 06
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness at the S91 Electric Parking Brake Switch.
- Test for B+ between the B+ circuit terminal listed below and ground:
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K83 Electric Parking Brake Control Module. |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the B+ circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K83 Electric Parking Brake Control Module. |
- Disconnect the harness at the K83 Electric Parking Brake Control Module.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 V between the following signal circuit terminals at the electric handbrake switch harness connector and ground:
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. |
- Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuits listed below and ground:
⇒ | If less than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground. |
- Test for less than 5 Ω between the following signal circuit terminals:
• | Electric parking brake switch harness terminal 1 and the electric parking brake control module terminal N |
• | Electric parking brake switch harness terminal 2 and the electric parking brake control module terminal C |
• | Electric parking brake switch harness terminal 3 and the electric parking brake control module terminal B |
• | Electric parking brake switch harness terminal 7 and the electric parking brake control module terminal D |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the S91 Electric Parking Brake Switch. If DTC resets, replace the K83 Electric Parking Brake Control Module.
C0293 08
Remove the EPB fuse and reinstall. Verify DTC C0293 08 is not set.
⇒ | If DTC C0293 08 is set replace the electric handbrake switch. |
Component Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the electric handbrake switch.
- Test for infinite resistance between the terminals listed below with the switch in the inactive state:
• | B+ terminal 4 and the park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | B+ terminal 4 and the park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and the park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and the park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 3 and the park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 3 and the park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 7 and the park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 7 and the park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
⇒ | If less than the specified range, replace the electric handbrake switch. |
- Test for less than 5 Ω between the terminals listed below with the switch in the inactive state:
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 1 and terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 4 and park brake switch signal terminal 7 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and park brake switch signal terminal 3 |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, replace the electric handbrake switch. |
- Test for less than 5 Ω between the terminals listed below with the switch in the apply position:
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 1 and terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 4 and park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | B+ terminal 4 and park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and park brake switch signal terminal 3 |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, replace the electric handbrake switch. |
- Test for less than 5 Ω between the terminals listed below with the switch in the apply position:
• | Park brake switch signal terminal 1 and terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and park brake switch signal terminal 1 |
• | B+ terminal 5 and park brake switch signal terminal 2 |
• | B+ terminal 4 and park brake switch signal terminal 7 |
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, replace the electric handbrake switch. |
