Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

Special Tools

    • KM-460-B Axle Shaft Remover
    • KM-507-C Ball Joint Remover

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitable support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the wheels. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove the hub nut.

  5. Remove the lower ball joint nut and pin.
  6. Separate the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint.

  8. Remove the outer track rod nut.
  9. Separate the outer track rod end using KM-507-C remover.

  11. Remove the front wheel drive shaft from the intermediate axle shaft using KM-460-B remover.

    Note: 

       • Support the unfastened end of the front wheel drive shaft. Do not allow the front wheel drive shaft to dangle freely from the transaxle for any length of time after it has been removed from the wheel hub.
       • Place a drain pan below the transaxle to catch the escaping fluid. Cap the transaxle drive opening after the front wheel drive shaft has been removed to keep the fluid in and any contamination out.

  13. Remove the intermediate axle shaft mounting bracket to engine block bolts and the shaft from the transaxle.

Installation Procedure

    Note: Do not damage the seals.

  1. Clean the hub seal and the transaxle seal.
  2. Install the intermediate axle shaft into the transaxle.
  3. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Tighten the intermediate axle shaft mounting bracket to engine block bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
  5. Note: The following service procedure is for vehicles equipped with an intermediate shaft.

  6. For the right wheel drive shaft, apply a very small amount of grease to the splines of the wheel drive shaft inner joint. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .
  7. Install the front wheel drive shaft into the intermediate axle shaft.
  8. Install the wheel hub onto the front wheel drive shaft.
  9. Mount the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint.

  11. Install the outer track rod into the knuckle/strut and install the outer track rod nut and tighten to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  13. Install the lower ball joint nut and tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  15. Install the hub nut and tighten to 320 N·m (236 lb ft).
  16. Install the wheels. Loosely install the nuts. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  17. Lower the vehicle to the floor.
  18. Tighten the wheel nuts to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).
  19. Refill the transaxle fluid to the proper level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check .
