Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
- Remove the front wheelhouse panel splash shield. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement .
- Disconnect the electrical connector for the front wheel speed sensor at the frame.
- Remove the front wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the front lower control arm.
- Remove the stabiliser shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
- Insert a drift or a punch (1) in the brake disc cooling fins.
- Rotate the brake disc until the drift or punch rests against the brake calliper mounting bracket.
- Using a breaker bar and the proper size socket (2), loosen the wheel drive shaft nut.
- Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft nut (1).
- Using the CH 28733-B remover (2), separate the wheel drive shaft from the front wheel hub (1).
- Remove the outer tie rod end from the knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Track rod Replacement .
- Remove the lower control arm ball joint bolt from the knuckle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
Note: Position a drain pan under the transmission when servicing the left wheel drive shaft.
- With help from an assistant, move the front knuckle assembly to the side.
- Using a large flat bladed screwdriver or pry bar (2), remove the wheel drive shaft (1) from the differential or intermediate shaft.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.
Note: If there is no washer on the wheel drive shaft, install a NEW washer.
- Remove and discard the washer (1) from the front wheel drive shaft (2). DO NOT re-use the washer, replace with NEW only.
Installation Procedure
- With the NEW washers installed, position the wheel drive shaft (1) in the vehicle.
- With help from an assistant, move the front knuckle assembly into the proper position.
- Install the wheel drive shaft in the front wheel hub.
- Install the lower control arm ball joint bolt. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
- Install the outer tie rod end. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Track rod Replacement .
- Install the stabiliser shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
- Install wheel drive shaft nut (1), hand-tighten
- Insert a drift or a punch (1) in the brake cooling fin.
- Rotate the brake disc until the drift or the punch rests against the brake calliper mounting bracket.
- Using a torque wrench (2) tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to:
• | First Pass, 150 N·m (111 lb ft) |
• | Second Pass, Loosen the nut 45 degrees |
• | Final Pass, 250 N·m (185 lb ft) |
- Reconnect the electrical connector for the front wheel speed sensor.
- Install the front wheel speed sensor wiring harness.
- Install the front wheelhouse panel splash shield. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement .
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tyre and Wheel Removal and Installation .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the fluid level of the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check .
