DTC P0016 or P0017

Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptors

DTC P0016 00: Crankshaft Position - Intake Camshaft Position Not Plausible

DTC P0017 00: Crankshaft Position - Exhaust Camshaft Position Not Plausible

Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position actuator system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust signals from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoids control the advance or the retard of the camshafts. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - inlet and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoids control the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.

The ECM uses the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust sensor information to monitor the correlation between the crankshaft and the camshaft positions.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTC P0335 00, P0336 00, P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00, P0366 00, P0641 00, or P0651 00 is not set
    • The engine is cranking or running.
    • The camshaft position actuator solenoid valves are in the parked position.
    • The DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake or camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust is greater than 10 ° advanced, or 10 ° retarded, in relationship to the crankshaft.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0016 00 and P0017 00 are Type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0016 00 and P0017 00 are Type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

The following conditions can also set the DTC:

    •  A short to ground in a camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit can cause this DTC to set.
    • Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or timing chain can cause this DTC to be set.
    • Excessive crankshaft end play can cause this DTC to set.
    • An actuator that is in the full advance or retard position can cause this DTC to set.
    • A crankshaft reluctor wheel that has moved in relationship to top dead centre (TDC) can cause this DTC to set.
    • Observing the desired and actual camshaft angle parameters, with a scan tool before a DTC sets, may help to isolate whether a condition is specific to one camshaft, or caused by a condition with the crankshaft timing.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: Incorrect oil viscosity, aftermarket engine oil additives, or engine oil that is overdue for changing can greatly affect the performance of the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve.

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0010 00, P0011 00, P0013 00, P0014 00, P0335 00, P0336 00, P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00, or P0366 00 should not be set.
  2. If a DTC is set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
  3. Engine idling at the normal operating temperature. DTCs P0016 00 or P0017 00 should not set.
  4. If a DTC sets, inspect for the following:
    • The correct installation of the Q6F Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or Q6E Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.
    • The correct installation of the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.
    • A timing chain tensioner condition.
    • An incorrectly installed timing chain.
    • Excessive play in the timing chain.
    • A timing chain that jumped teeth.
    • A crankshaft reluctor wheel that has moved in relationship to top dead centre (TDC) on the crankshaft.
  5. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the freeze frame/failure records data.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
