Steering Gear Pipe and Seal Replacement

Removal Procedure

    Note: The left-hand drive model is shown. The right-hand drive model is similar.

  1. Syphon the power steering fluid from the fluid reservoir.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement : LNQ  → LF1  → LE5 .
  4. Remove the transaxle rear mount. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement : AWD  → FWD .
  5. If equipped, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .

  7. Loosen the fittings and disconnect the steering gear pipes from the steering gear at the valve end.

  9. Loosen the fittings and disconnect the steering gear pipes from the steering gear at the cylinder end.
  10. Remove the steering gear pipes from the vehicle.
  11. Discard the O-ring seals if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Replace the O-ring seals if necessary.
  2. Caution: Refer to Using Proper Power Steering Fluid Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Lubricate the O-ring seals with power steering fluid.
  4. Place the O-ring seals into the housing.
  5. Position the steering gear pipes on the steering gear.
  6. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  7. Connect the steering gear pipes to the steering gear at the valve end and tighten the fittings to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).

  9. Connect the steering gear pipes to the steering gear at the cylinder end and tighten the fittings to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).
  10. If equipped, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
  11. Install the transaxle rear mount. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement : AWD  → FWD .
  12. Install the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement : LNQ  → LF1  → LE5 .
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Fill the fluid reservoir with power steering fluid. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  15. Caution: Refer to Air in the Power Steering System Caution in the Preface section.

  16. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
